Embracing the Environmental Movement

Earth Day is about supporting the environmental movement and honoring a range of individuals and organizations that have been working tirelessly to create a healthier planet for every living being. This call-to-action transcends political and economic lines because as Wendell Berry once said, ‘The Earth is what we all have in common.’ More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities each year, which includes a wide range of global initiatives that encourage sustainability on every level.

At Erbaviva we believe that Every Day is Earth Day, fully recognizing the important role that humanity plays in our ecosystem. Since the inception of Erbaviva maintaining a high standard of social and environmental accountability has always stood as an essential part of our objective. Every choice, from becoming USDA Organic and Demeter Biodynamic, to becoming a B-Corp, was made in an effort to manage our carbon footprint and participate in environmental innovations.

Recent studies are reporting that carbon emission are increasing at an alarming rate and we feel it is imperative that we continue to find new ways to improve our green practices. For Earth Day 2014 we are excited to announce that the installation of solar panels is currently underway at Erbaviva’s Southern California manufacturing facility!

SOLAR-PANEL

Thanks to companies like Renewable Choice Energy, who offer energy credits, we have kept our facility consistently running on green energy. However, this new project allows us to extend our role in energy conservation by contributing to our city’s power grid and consuming less then we contribute. This is important because the average small business is said to generate over 10 tons of carbon dioxide per year through the use of electricity. Carbon dioxide emissions heat the planet’s surface and oceans causing polar ice to melt, oceans levels to elevate, shorelines to erode and animals to become endangered. Solar power is the cleanest, greenest form of energy possible. It is free from pollution and completely renewable.

This project is scheduled for completion in June. We will make sure to keep you posted on any new developments. We hope everyone enjoys Earth Day 2014! Visit earthday.org to find Earth Day events in your area!

Let us know if you have any questions or if there is an ingredient you would like to know more about!

Week of March 10th – Ingredient of the Week: Organic Rosemary CO2 Extract

Rosemary is known for its relaxing aromatic scent and it’s delectable flavor. This evergreen herb is a member of the mint family and flourishes in Mediterranean climates. The natural health benefits of rosemary were recognized hundreds of years ago. In ancient Greece it is said that students wore rosemary garlands while studying to help improve their concentration and memory…ancient aromatherapy! Rosemary also contains antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties to promote vibrant, glowing skin. The Organic Rosemary CO2 extract used by Erbaviva is an incredibly effective antioxidant that helps naturally maintain the longevity and freshness of the ingredients in many of our favorite oils, butters, lotions and creams.

Week of March 3rd – Ingredient of the Week: Organic Almond Oil

With it’s nourishing and deeply hydrating qualities Organic Almond Oil has become a favorite in the beauty industry. It is safe to use for even the most delicate, sensitive skin and absorbs quickly and easily leaving skin soft and silky. Almond oil is abundant in essential minerals and vitamins and is known to rejuvenate skin and reduce the appearance of scars. These amazing benefits were recognized thousands of years ago by the Roman Empire and throughout Europe. At Erbaviva we often use this enriching base oil for our therapeutic massage oils and recommend blending it with our bath salts for a fresh, detoxifying body scrub.

Week of February 24th – Ingredient of the Week: Organic Vanilla Extract

Vanilla has a fragrant, reminiscent aroma that seems to be universally treasured. Vanilla beans are the fruit of an orchid vine, called Vanilla planifolia, which originated from Mexico. Mayan and Aztec civilizations used to grind up vanilla beans to create medicinal elixirs. In present times this sweet spice is used in aromatherapy as a mood enhancer and tension reliever. When applied to the skin it is also known to contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as being rich in B vitamins. Erbaviva uses a certified organic, therapeutic grade Vanilla planifolia fruit extract in the Shaping & Firming lines, and in the Vanilla Grapefruit Lip Balm for both it’s aromatic and restorative properties.

Find-Bliss-Winter-2014-Combo_WebErbaviva Essential Oils were featured in the Winter 2014 issue of Find Bliss Los Angeles!

Erbaviva was born in Los Angeles, CA so we were thrilled to find our essential oils featured in Find Bliss Los Angeles in the enlightening article, “Sanctuary for Sleep”. This article aligns with Erbaviva’s appreciation for alternative methods to achieve relaxation and well-being.  It explores stories of individuals who sought a holistic approach to relieve anxiety, and improve their quality of sleep, and in turn experienced life altering results.

Writer, Beth Prandini states, ‘Over 50 million people in the U.S. according to the National Institute of Health, struggle with sleep issues and disorders.’ She goes on to discuss the idea of being mindful of one’s sleep environment by exploring the benefits of Feng Shui and using calming color palettes and lighting schemes in the bedroom.  In addition, supportive bedding and breathwork to “reprogram” before going to sleep is proving valuable.

The article is followed by a list of sleep accessories which includes Erbaviva Neroli Essential Oil.  The editor wrote, “Calming Neroli helps relieve insomnia, anxiety, and stress. Use it in an aromatherapy diffuser to relax.” Enjoy Neroli Essential Oil along with our full Aromatherapy line of Organic and wild crafted essentials oils: www.erbaviva.com/aromatherapy

Creating Romance Rituals

Just after New Years malls and markets start hanging red décor and filling their shelves with heart-shaped chocolates and goodies. Valentine’s Day waits just around the corner and couples start planning for romantic evenings. Some people start the night with extravagance, while others keep it simple, but at the end of the night the goal is always the same, romance and intimacy.

Valentines-Day-Couple_1000x_Narrow

So how can we navigate the evening in a way that will result in mood elevation and affection? Sometimes the most subtle of details can make a person feel special. Warm lighting, a decadent chocolaty aphrodisiac for desert, a fresh set of Egyptian cotton sheets, but at Erbaviva our expertise is aromatherapy.

Valentines-Day-Hearts_1000x

Erbaviva values the fact that for centuries the therapeutic properties of essential oils have been used to benefit the body. Some uses are for the physical body while others are more emotionally based. In modern times science has confirmed that an aroma can change a person’s disposition. But sometimes our experiences speak louder than science. When’s the last time you walked outside after a rainy night and felt uplifted by the smell of bourgeoning flowers and fresh-cut grass? Or caught the scent of an old perfume that completely transported you into a vivid memory? Evoking our sense of smell can be invigorating and enlivening. Likewise, infusing the home or bedroom with romantic aromatics may create the ideal sensual ambiance.

Here is a list of our favorite romantic essential oils:

Essential-Oils-Stylized-WebGrapefruit essential oil is known as an energetic, uplifting oil with a bright, citrusy aroma. It said to create a warm atmosphere, perfect for date night.

Lavender essential oil is also known to lift spirits and create a soothing sensation. The scent it sweet and inviting.

Jasmine essential oil is considered an effective aphrodisiac with an exotic, floral scent. It blends perfectly with citrus notes.

Neroli essential oil is earthy and zesty with floral undertones. It is known to stimulate romance, desire and to rejuvenate the senses.

In the Victorian tradition Roses symbolize passion and love. Rose essential oil embraces this sediment with its intoxicatingly fragrant allure. A high-grade rose essential oil will boast a sweet but fresh full-bodied bouquet.

We recommend using essential oils in a diffuser or mixing in a few drop with your favorite carrier oil for a sensual massage. Erbaviva offers bath salts, massage oils and room sprays that make using essential oils easy. Explore the Relax line (Lavender, Rose, Neroli) and Embrace line (Grapefruit, Jasmine) to see which items may be right for you.

We hope everyone has an exciting Valentine’s Day and these little romance rituals find a way in to our daily lives.

A Passion for Pure Ingredients

Being one of the early pioneers of Organic personal care products Erbaviva’s passion for pure ingredients has inspired our products since 1996. We source only the highest quality emollients, emulsifiers, nutrient-rich base oils, herbal extracts and therapeutic-grade essential oils. All of our ingredients from organic oats to organic echinacea have a remarkable story behind them. We would like to share our passion for these restorative botanicals and living herbs with you. We will be featuring a new ingredient each week so let us know if you have any suggestions!

Cocoa-Butter-ImageWeek of February 17th - Ingredient of the Week: Emollient Cocoa Butter

Cocoa Butter is a luxuriant gift from nature derived from the exotic cacao bean. The cacao tree is native to warm climates near the Equator and its complex chemistry is revered by ancient culture. This cream-colored butter has a soft sweet aroma and is rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that can help fight free radicals and protect skin. Cocoa butter is widely recognized for its deeply moisturizing and rejuvenating effects, as well as its ability to prevent the appearance of scars and fine lines. Erbaviva sources only the finest fair-trade organic cocoa butter assuring the highest level of therapeutic properties for our products. Although this ingredient is featured in many Erbaviva products it is most popular within the mommy-to-be category.

Chamomile_Up_Close

Week of February 10th - Ingredient of the Week: Calming Chamomile

With its subtly sweet, earthy aroma chamomile essential oil can be one of the most beneficial botanicals to ease stress and tension. It is also known to soothe achy muscles, promote sleep and comfort skin irritation. Chamomile has a rich history and can be traced back to Ancient Egypt where it was seen as a “sacred” herb. With a full appreciation for the mild yet effective nature of chamomile Erbaviva traditionally uses it in formulas that are crafted for baby.

A New Point of View for 2014

The Benefits of Appreciation

As we ease into 2014 there is still lingering talk of New Year Resolutions. I noticed a trending theme in online articles encouraged a fresh approach to our resolutions by putting focus on the positive things that we want to bring into our lives rather than on the negative that we want to discard.

2014-New-Year-Image

In the same spirit there are popular discussions around reviewing the past year with intentional appreciation rather than inadvertent regret. Although every year comes with good and bad many have found that concentrating on what we have to be thankful for can elevate our mood and general outlook on life. Scientific studies show that appreciative attitudes can result in less stress, increased productivity, improved relationships and better health.

I spent a little time discussing this topic with our immediate community and these ideas really seemed to resonate with people. The general consensus was that having a list of “don’ts” when starting out the new year can feel restrictive and overwhelming but having a list of new ideas feels more inviting and inspiring. In the same way looking upon the past year with acceptance and appreciation gives a sense of confidence and optimism for the year to come.

So in keeping with this new 2014 point of view we have come up with a couple gratifying and beneficial ideas for the New Year.

Winter Activities

Snow-Shoeing

Increasing fitness is by far the most common New Years goal. So how can we make getting active fun in the middle of winter? Different corners of the U.S. experience different weather but snow sports like snowboarding orsnowshoeing can feel more like “play” than “work” and still get your heart rate going. If you don’t live in a snowy city most areas offer indoor ice skating – which feels festive – but can be done any time of year.If you prefer to stay out of the cold all together consider a new fitness class in your area to get you out of your comfort zone. For a list of possibilities try www.gorecess.com or www.workoutspots.com.

Resolve to Go Organic

Eating healthfully is another new years favorite. There is a lot of talk about eating organic, local, sustainable foods and this may be the perfect time to embark on this journey. To make it fun you can have a family taste test. Try comparing a farm fresh, organic heirloom tomato or fresh organic tangerine to the conventional version and the whole family will experience the distinctive difference of organic first hand. Not only is this produce fresher, tastier and more nutritious, it is also toxin free, and when buying locally you essentially help conserve fuel, cut greenhouse gas emissions and support local farmers. Another fun approach can be to pick a random fruit or vegetable at your local farmers market and find a new recipe to compliment your ingredient. Doing this once a week can be a fun activity and may spark a significant lifestyle change. There are plenty of resources to help you find community supported agriculture in you area such as www.localharvest.org or www.eatwellguide.org.

Pamper Yourself More Often

Understanding the concept of how attitudes and perceptions affect our health illuminates the importance of keeping a positive, thankful attitude. But life gets busy and we don’t always take the time we need to relax, de-stress and reflect. Making an appointment to pamper yourself a couple times a week may be the most beneficial resolution of all. Studies show that using relaxation techniques can counteract the negative effects of stress by improving our quality of sleep and increasing our sense of calm and well-being. If you are already considering the shift to organics you may want to take it a step further with organic skin care products that aid in relaxation through aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is the ultimate pampering tool and can enhance both physical and emotional well-being using therapeutic-grade, organic essential oils. We recommend the Erbaviva Relax line, a soothing blend of organic lavender, rose and neroli to help release tension. Or visit our website to browse the full collection of aromatherapy inspired, organic skincare products.

Whatever activities engage you this season we hope they will uplift and inspire you. We would love to hear your thoughts and impressions on this blog or any related topics.

Here is to a healthy and happy 2014!

Happi Magazine – January 2014

Wednesday, January 1st, 2014

Happi-January-2014-Combo_WebPresident of Erbaviva, Robin Brown, was interviewed by Happi Magazine!

Happi Magazine specializes in the global personal care and household product market.  In the recent article, “Nature’s Bounty Grows” president of Erbaviva, Robin Brown, shared his perspective about the growth of the natural/organic personal care industry.  Organic Skin Care is without a doubt a growing trend and Erbaviva is a proud early pioneer of the Organic Movement.

During this 3-page spread Robin discusses the early years of Erbaviva stating, “This was in 1996 before there was an organic trend so the industry did not understand the need to manufacture organic product with care and integrity.  For this reason, my wife and I started creating organic soaps, butters and balms formulated for baby and pregnancy in our own home in Topanga, CA.”

Robin was asked to discuss his outlook on how the Erbaviva customer has changed over time. “We don’t feel the typical Erbaviva consumer has changed a lot over time, although we do feel our audience has greatly expanded.  Our customers have always been sophisticated and well-informed shoppers who want an organic product with a distinct level of quality.  But since the organic trend is so strong, the number of educated consumers is much greater.”
